Stoney Creek United Church has found a name for its new community hub.
The historic church at 1 King St. W. held a contest — open to church and community members — that generated more than 50 ideas last month.
Longtime church member Joan Sturch’s submission, Bell Tower Place, was the winner.
Council chair Doug Caldwell says the contest was well received and many of the proposed names resonated with church members.
“(Bell Tower Place) made the committee’s short list, only to be the first choice of the congregation on Sept. 1,” he said.
Sturch said she came up with the idea after considering Stoney Creek United Church’s physical traits that have been in the eye of the community for a long time; her attention was drawn to the building’s original bell tower from 1903.
She also thought about the church’s historical significance to the community and how it’s been a central presence at the corner of King Street and Lake Avenue for more than 100 years, she said.
“I felt the name, Bell Tower Place, would reflect the church’s most prominent feature, its history and the idea that it’s now a community hub for Stoney Creek,” Sturch said. “I’m honoured that the name was selected.”
